There was an auction last week that ended late at night (Marvel Movie Showcase 1 9.6 CPV) that I would had bid much higher! The buyer got that 9.6 for a real steal if you ask me !!! I think this Corona Virus and auctions finishing late at night don’t help books get the best prices. Hence, lets remember that comics selling during January and February are somewhat weak as well ….and March everything starts picking up again. Yet, look at that ASM 238 9.8 selling for $4650 usd and only those with an American address were allowed to bid !

On March 24th 2020 a CPV Archie’s Pals N Gals 23 CGC 1.8(1st appearance of Josie) sold on ebay for $412.00!. A truly amazing sale for a GD- 1.8 grade copy.

  3. I just looked over the recent CPV sales on eBay since March 1st and wow are there some bargains out there right now (as would be expected during the COVID-19 economy). With regard to noteworthy sales, varyant555 already mentioned above the Pals N Gals #23 in CGC 1.8 selling for $412 USD at auction… that’s a noteworthy result indeed. And screencaptured below are a sampling of some other recent sales that stood out to me. Included in the below is a Detective Comics #583 variant in CGC 9.6 which sold at auction for $445 USD on March 29th; a Marvel Tails #1 variant in CGC 9.8 which sold at auction for $915 USD on March 8th; and at the bottom of the screenshot is the ASM #238 CPV in CGC 9.8 which sold at auction for $4650 USD on March 1st.

I noticed that a Detective Comics 577 CGC 9.8 CPV just sold April 28th, 2020 on Ebay for $711.13. Truly an eye opening sale in a certified 9.8 grade.

A CGG 8.5 CPV copy of G.I Joe 21 sold on Ebay for $597.00 on May 3rd 2020. I can only imagine what a 9.8 copy would sell for if a copy were to ever grade in a certified 9.8 grade.

  7. I’ve been impressed with the strengthening we’ve seen in the comic book marketplace since March — there are still bargains to be found out there for sure, but also some eye-popping high sales prices too. The below sampling goes from mid April to the end of June.

I noticed myself paying close attention to ASM #252 as a gauge / bell-weather for strength; you’ll see a bunch of examples shown below. Most notably, a 9.8 sold on June 23rd but as a best-offer-accepted with some unknown discount from an ask of $1695. Back in April a 9.8 had sold at auction for $921 with 38 bids.

Some other sales that stood out include: A CGC 9.4 CPV copy of Archie’s Girls Betty & Veronica #320 recently sold for $1836, a Secret Wars #8 CPV in CGC 9.8 sold for $1400, and a Marvel Team-Up #141 CPV in CGC 9.8 sold for $1275 at auction with 22 bids.

We also saw a Thor #337 CPV in CGC 9.8 change hands at $750 on a buy-it-now, and a Detective Comics #577 CPV in CGC 9.8 at $733 on a buy-it-now. An ASM #238 CPV in CGC 9.6 Qualified (No Tattooz) auctioned for $810 with 22 bids.

Here below are the above sales as well as more recent examples of interest:

Awesome job tracking these. I’ve noticed that pretty much any CPV that’s a CGC 9.8, regardless of the title or publisher, will sell no matter what and get a great price. I see lots of 9.4s and 9.6s just sit there and not sell while it’s 9.8 twin will sell instantaneously. It’s incredibly odd and discerning because in my opinion a 9.6 is just as nice. Am I the only one noticing the massive difference between how a 9.6 and a 9.8 are viewed by cdn variant collectors? It’s a miracle that these books even hit the 9.4 or higher grade given their life on spinner racks Unbagged and Unboarded. It honestly feels like cdn variant collectors are being snobs.

      • Hi Sal, I’ve noticed the 9.8 premiums getting extreme in the hobby outside of the CPV niche too; it was remarkable to me to recently witness people bidding a 9.8 TMNT book to 7x the level of 9.6’s of the very same issue.

Over the years I’ve encountered a lot of collectors out there who take a “9.8 WHITE or nothing” attitude to their collections after a certain publication year. I remember a conversation that really struck me, years ago (early on in the Signature Series), with a collector who was talking about how often you could win a 9.8 on the market, then get it signed, and it would come back a 9.6… or, win a 9.6 on the market, get it signed, and it would come back a 9.8!

I wonder how well the following strategy would work out these days: Accumulate a whole bunch of 9.6’s, then submit them to CGC to be re-graded. I wonder what percentage of them would re-grade to 9.8? I also wonder how ‘crossovers’ from other grading companies would do under this strategy, i.e. would a PGX or CBCS 9.6 have better odds of coming back a CGC 9.8, versus the odds of a re-submitted CGC 9.6 coming back a 9.8?

I agree with everything you said Ben. I’m glad that I’m not the only one who is seeing this. I love cdn variants like all of you, but I hope ppl start accepting 9.4s and 9.6s as time goes on, especially since we have such a smaller pool of overall print runs to begin with.

I would like to report that I noticed that an Amazing Spider-Man 238 CGC 9.4 CPV just sold for $1,440.54 on Ebay on September 12th, 2020, truly an amazing high end sale price for a 9.4 copy.

    • Just a note to let everyone know that Angelo investigated this ASM 238 sale, and it turns out that eBay reported the wrong price in the sold listings section; it is not clear whether it was an error in eBay’s exchange rate data for that date that caused eBay to show a too-high price, or, if it was sold on a best-offer and eBay showed the asking price without crossing it out, in error. But whatever happened with eBay’s reporting of this sale, Angelo found out that the true sale price, in USD (properly converted), was $987 USD.

  11. Hi everyone, here is a sampling of some noteworthy eBay auctions and buy-it-now’s that I spotted which were not already mentioned yet, with highlights including a Transformers #1 CPV in CGC 9.8 which was an auction ended over the weekend at a high bid of $2425, a Marvel Team-Up #141 CPV in CGC 9.8 which auctioned in July for $1224, some Thor #337 CPV’s including a 9.8 with WHITE pages at $999.95 on a buy-it-now and another with OWW pages which sold at auction with a high bid of $810.

A TMNT Adventures #1 (1988) CPV in CGC 9.8 (the direct edition $1.25 CPV version with no bar code) auctioned for $655; an X-Factor #6 CPV in CGC 9.8 sold on a buy-it-now for $599.99, a Secret Wars #1 CPV in 9.8 sold on a buy-it-now for $399, a Voltron #1 CPV in CGC 9.8 sold at auction with one bid (over this past weekend) for $399.99, and also over this past weekend a string of Vampirella CPVs in CGC 9.8 sold for $329-399 each as buy-it-now’s.

Here below are screenshots of all of the above, plus lots of other example sales that I found noteworthy:

  12. A reader emailed me that a GI Joe #21 CPV sold raw in 3.0 for a noteworthy price on eBay. When looking for it to take a screenshot to post here, I found that it was a MyComicShop sale. I was curious to see how CPVs are selling on eBay for MyComicShop in general and looking in the eBay sold listings section for their account I can see that they’ve sold 131 different CPVs in the last several months.

Their asking prices are lower on their own website versus on eBay, so I’m sure this leaves a whole lot out (i.e. books that they sold directly on their website wouldn’t show up as sold on eBay — I know that anytime I ever see something I want from MCS listed on eBay I always go over to MCS and buy it directly for cheaper), but below are some of the highlights of raw CPVs that MCS has sold on eBay in recent months. Unlike the typical raw comic on eBay where the grade assigned by the seller is quite often, let’s say, “questionable”, meanwhile over at MCS I have always found their grading to be quite solid and professional.

Recent raw CPV sales highlights for MCS on eBay included a raw Batman #357 CPV in FN 6.0 which sold for $170, the GI Joe #21 CPV in GD/VG 3.0 that prompted me to go looking (thank you to the reader who emailed!) which sold for $130, a Secret Wars #8 CPV in VG- 3.5 sold for $82, a Detective Comics #566 in FN+ 6.5 sold for $65, a Star Wars #106 CPV in VF 8.0 which sold for $48, a Batman #357 CPV in VF- 3.5 which sold for $46, a Batman #366 CPV in VG 4.0 which sold for $29, and some others pictured below:

  13. Hi everyone, there have been some more noteworthy CPV sales in recent weeks, including the 2nd highest valued CPV sale ever observed to-date: A Transformers #1 CPV in CGC 9.8 sold at auction for $2,425 on 9/13. Another noteworthy 9.8 CPV auction ended several hours afterwards, an ASM #252 which auctioned for $1,522. [While taking the #252 screenshot, I included a recent CGC 8.0 CPV sale of the same issue, for interesting contrast — the 8.0 sold for $139 on a buy-it-now].

A couple of other individual sales of note: an ASM #257 CPV in CGC 9.8 found a bid at $516.99; a Spectacular Spider-Man #107 CPV in CGC 9.8 went at auction for $287.17 with 40 bids; a raw mid-grade Blip #1 sold the same night it was listed for $263.12 on a buy-it-now; and a pair of Thor #337 CPVs in 9.4 recently sold within a short period of another, one a buy-it-now at $184.18 and the other an auction ended at $186.06 with 35 bids. [Given the higher activity in the market for Thor #337 and ASM #252, these are two books that have the benefit of giving us more sales to compare — more data — as we try and keep our fingers on the pulse of the market].

And then there have been some recent noteworthy “strings of sales” that are well worth pointing out: First, a string of seven GI Joe CPVs ranging in price from $89 to $125 each, sold on 9/11/2020 all around the same timestamp. And another string of Vampirella CPVs together with a string of Creepy CPVs sold at the same time on 9/19/2020 as well — I count 15 Creepy CPVs, priced from $149 to $275 each, and I count 9 Vampirella CPVs, priced from $122 to $349 each.

Finally, I want to mention that following my post here on September 14th, it was pointed out to me that the Rocket Raccoon CPV auction in CGC 9.8 that ended on September 3rd, ended at 1:07 AM in the morning — this is an interesting observation, given that the sale price struck many people as being surprisingly low. [Lower, for example, than the Spectacular #107 example shared above]. Did the scheduled end time have an impact on the realized price?

And more generally: Given that many bidders like to wait until the last minute, or even the last few seconds, before placing their bid, it is interesting to wonder whether there is an optimal time (and/or an optimal day) to have an auction end? (And on the flip side of that coin is there a sub-optimal day and time — if an auction ends at 2AM does it lose most of its potential bidders because they are sleeping? Or, might it cause more forceful bidding wars among those who stayed up to just to bid, i.e. if two people both have an attitude of I stayed up until 2 in the damn morning for this comic so I’m absolutely going to win it no matter what!!!)

A long time ago, way back when I first joined eBay in 2003 to sell off my childhood comic book collection, I remember wondering this same thing about timing, i.e. what day should I aim for my auctions to end, and what time? If anyone has any individual insights into this I’d love to hear them. Personally, from what I have read about the subject, and some “A/B testing” of my own, I have come to believe that it is best for an eBay auction to be run for the maximum 10 days, starting on a Thursday night and therefore ending on a Sunday night (that way encompassing two weekends).

By the way, I also noticed about the Rocket Raccoon listing that the seller spelled the title as “Racoon” (with one ‘c’); whether that made any difference is another question (if there is a group of collectors out there looking for the book who all saved an eBay search for “Rocket Raccoon #1 Canadian” for example, would the “Rocket Racoon” listing with one ‘c’ have made their inboxes??).

Here below are screenshots of the new noteworthy sales I mentioned above:

  14. Hi everyone, three things I want to share today: (1) Surprising results (they surprised me anyway) of some “mis-listed” CPVs ended last Friday at auction, (2) I discovered, and will document below, an eBay software bug that you all need to know about, and (3) a couple of new noteworthy CPV auctions to report.

    (1) Something you’ve heard me harp on for years and years, is the opportunity presented by “mis-listed” variants, where the seller has pictured the more-rare type you’re after, but the title (and description) mentions none of the corresponding keywords related to the more-rare type, because the seller has no idea what they own. (As long as you actually receive the pictured comic, this can be a great way to land the more-rare version for regular price).

For example, suppose you were listing a Batman #405 Canadian Price Variant for sale — it would be critical to have “Canadian Price Variant” in your title… If your title was instead simply “Batman #405” (and that’s it), then nobody who is out there searching for “Batman 405 Canadian” or “Batman 405 Variant” etc. would ever find your listing!! They wouldn’t find it when searching eBay, and they wouldn’t be emailed the listing if they have set up a “saved search” with those refined/targeted search terms. So I refer to such listings that will not properly reach their target audience as “mis-listed” variants. You can find them by searching the issue number broadly (e.g. just search “batman 405”), scroll through all the listings, and pause at any bar coded copies, checking the cover price to see if you’ve found the CPV.

The best mis-listed opportunities (which unfortunately have grown fewer and fewer in number over the years) are “buy-it-now” listings that you can immediately grab, before any other mis-listed-variant-hunters find it, where the seller presumably has checked the going rate for the issue number in general and then puts an asking price for their variant copy right in-line with what you’d expect to pay for the prevalent direct edition.

Auction mis-listings, however, provide a week to ten days for others to dig up these mis-listed variants and then bid on them. In the “olden days” of hunting for mis-listed variants, I’d see auction results on mis-listed books ending in-line with direct editions. Lately, it feels like quite a long time since I’ve seen any of the bigger CPV keys, described as being in NM-range, at mis-listed auction. So when I spotted mis-listed auctions for Batman #405, 406, and 407 CPVs recently, I added them to my watchlist. [The seller had some other CPVs mis-listed as well]. I then looked up where direct editions of these Year One issues are selling at auction these days, finding they were around $15-20 each, sometimes higher, sometimes lower. For example, here’s one recently-auctioned direct edition set:

I placed my lowball bids accordingly, on the mis-listed Batman Year One CPVs, and crossed my fingers I might win one or more. But instead of the bidding staying within the direct edition price ballpark, the bidding exploded into premium territory, ending here:

The reason I found this result so astonishing, is because it must mean that (a) “mis-listed CPV hunters” out there found the above listings, presumably hunting for mis-listed bargains, and (b) they were willing to bid at premiums anyway. So I thought the above auction results were worthy of sharing with you all.

    (2) EBay has a software bug. Here’s the story of how I accidentally discovered it. First off, I’m sure you all know how there are (a) auction listings, (b) “best-offer” listings — where presumably the seller has some flexibility on price and allows offers to be submitted, and (c) “buy-it-now” listings — where presumably the seller is firm on price and there is no button to submit an offer.

Have you ever put a best-offer listing, or a buy-it-now listing, on your eBay “Watchlist” and then some time later received an email from eBay that looks like this below?

This smart new eBay feature helps sellers “get the ball rolling” on a negotiation — if a seller has put their book up for sale at, say, an ask of $300 with “best offer” enabled, and the listing accumulates a bunch of watchers, yet nobody is submitting any best offers, then with eBay’s new feature the seller can put their listing on sale at a special discount sent to just those watchers. Ebay sends an email like the above to the various watchers, and a recipient may potentially then have the thought, “I guess if I want this book I had better make a counter-offer (or just take the offered discount), before one of the other competing watchers does…

I searched my inbox to find when this type of offer first started coming through to me, and the first one I myself got, was September 21, 2019, so about a year and a week ago. Looks like I’ve gotten eight of them over the course of this past year:

If I’m getting these from time to time, then I’m sure you too have noticed them. But I only just recently tried out this new eBay feature myself, for a book I had up for sale, and I have to confess, I screwed up royally. I had a Hulk #340 listed as a buy-it-now at $219.99 feeling I would be firm on that price, and it accumulated a lot of watchers. Some weeks later I thought maybe I’d put the book to auction; but I remembered those “special discount” emails I had gotten in the past, and figured what the heck, I’ll put it on sale for $20 off and see if I can sell it this weekend.

I somehow totally screwed up, and instead of my offer being set at a $20 discount, an offer went out for $20. An incredibly kind and wonderful eBayer “came to my rescue” by first buying the offer at $20, then messaging with me, letting me know they assumed it was a mistake and that I should cancel the order; and I am so thankful for their kindness in “letting me off the hook” and affirming my belief that the world is full of wonderful people out there.

So that was my embarrassing-to-share, royal screw-up. Now I bring you to the part of the story where I discovered eBay’s software bug. Somehow the other day I was searching the sold listings section, and by chance I found my own Hulk 340 listing — the same one I had accidentally sold for twenty bucks — and it is listed by eBay as a buy-it-now sale, for $219.99:

I was very surprised to see this, as I would have assumed eBay would have shown it with a “crossed-out” price given that it was sold via an offer. I.e. they should be displaying it the way they do best-offer-type listings, indicating it sold for some amount under ask, and yet, they are displaying my listing as if it was a straight buy-it-now! I think that this bug discovery explains what may have happened with the ASM #238 listing discussed here the other week.

Until eBay fixes this bug, it must be assumed that any buy-it-now sale might have in reality been made at a discount, and there is one CPV seller in particular we have identified as likely using this technique for some of their noteworthy sales — I will not mention them by name because they have done absolutely nothing wrong here (this is eBay’s fault, this is eBay’s bug in the way discount-offer sales are being reported in their sold listings section, and no seller using this new feature of theirs is doing anything nefarious or wrong whatsoever).

    (3) A couple of recent CPV auctions of note since the last update:

A Power Pack #1 CPV in CGC 9.6 sold at auction for $123.40 with 19 bids, and a New Mutants #1 CPV in CGC 9.8 with WHITE pages found a bidder at $359.99:

  15. Hi everyone, here are some recent noteworthy sales, starting with the CGC 9.8 Amazing Spider-Man #238 CPV that was just auctioned at Heritage Auctions, going for a winning bid of $7,800. This is the second 9.8 copy of this issue we’ve seen sell so far this year (the other was in March for $4,650), marking a 68% increase over the March auction result, and marking the highest documented CPV sale to date.

Turning to recent eBay auctions, there has been a dramatic surge in price for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #1, and with that surge we’ve seen a lot of copies coming out of the woodwork and going up for auction. One of the unique features of this particular issue is that BOTH direct edition AND newsstand CPVs exist, and in turn one of the big outstanding questions we’ve had about this book when it comes to our price guide is whether we should note the newsstand copies as worth notably more (or the same or less) versus the direct edition copies.

In last year’s value survey, advisors were asked to give separate value opinions for the newsstand and direct edition CPV for the issue; we wanted to learn if there was a consensus as to whether one type should receive a premium over the other type. Although the median answer reflected a premium for the newsstand type, there was a lack of consensus with some advisors giving no premium for one type over the other, or, declining to give an opinion on the matter due to lack of sufficient data.

The below screenshot includes the following sales examples for the book:

    — A CBCS 9.8 CPV Direct Edition which auctioned for $1,875
    — A pair of CPV direct editions described as FN auctioned for $255
    — A single CPV newsstand edition described as FN+ auctioned for $216
    — A set of #1-3 CPV newsstand copies described as VF to VF/NM auctioned for $534
    — A set of #1-3 CPV direct edition copies described as VF/NM to NM- auctioned for $181.48
    — A set of #1-3 CPV direct edition copies described as NM sold on a best-offer for some amount under $210
    — A single CPV newsstand edition described as VF/NM-to-NM auctioned for $486.74
    — A single CPV newsstand edition without grade description and with title typoed as “AVENTURES” auctioned for $167.50

The bidding does seem to be stronger for the newsstand CPVs across these examples, for example the #1-3 newsstand set did more than twice as well as the #1-3 direct edition sets, and the FN+ newsstand copy at $216 did almost as well as the pair of FN direct editions.

This an epic result. With all the price escalation of late, around the obvious silver, and bronze keys, this book is still climbing along with them. Newsstand issues are at $1,300 – $1,600, and regular 9.8’s are tracking around $700 – $1,200. The gap for this CPV looks like it’s extending.

  23. Another Thor #337 CGC 9.8 CPV sale at Heritage edged out a new record for the Beta Ray Bill key, at $3,480:

[Wow, Heritage Auctions now boasts 3 out of the top 6 CPV sales we’ve recorded to date!]

  24. Hi everyone, the below Masters of the Universe #1 (Star, 5/1986) 95 cent variant in CGC 9.8 auctioned on ComicLink for $1,117:

Meanwhile, is anyone aware of any new news (or rumors) having to do with Power Princess (Zarda Shelton)? The CGC census shows three Defenders #112 CPVs in 9.8 on record, and all three of them recently sold, a day apart, one after the other, for $749 each. It turns out that the seller is none other than our own Paul Clairmont, so I was able to check with him to confirm these sales really occurred and yes, this is three different copies, which sold one after the other after the other. Here they are screencaptured below, along with a few other sales that caught my eye:

Truly an amazing sale for a raw copy CPV of that book. I would imagine if it were a CGC 4.0 VG copy rather than a raw copy, it would have sold for a lot more than $227.00 USD?

  28. Hi everyone, below is a sampling of recent eBay sales I spotted that struck me as noteworthy, since last update:

◉ Confirmed with Paul Clairmont (seller): Two more Defenders #112 CPVs in CGC 9.8 sold for $749 each.

◉ A Thor #337 CPV in CGC 9.8 sold for $2,328.29 on a buy-it-now (Angelo confirmed this price via GPA). This is noteworthy in being dramatically lower than the previous few 9.8 sales we’ve tracked, but this particular copy also differed in having OWW instead of WHITE pages. The price in this case was also set by the seller, rather than being an auction house result.

    ◉ A Thor #337 CPV in CGC 9.6 meanwhile auctioned for $472.69

    ◉ A Star Wars #81 CPV in CGC 9.6 auctioned for $280.65

    ◉ A Secret Wars #8 CPV in CGC 9.0 auctioned for $249.05

    ◉ A Secret Wars #8 CPV in CGC 9.4 auctioned for $492.99

    ◉ A Secret Wars #1 CPV in CGC 9.0 auctioned for $149.68

    ◉ A Secret Wars #1 CPV in CGC 9.6 auctioned for $407.00

  29. Hi everyone, here are some noteworthy CPV sales since last update:

    — Over at Heritage, a Secret Wars #8 CPV in CGC 9.8 auctioned for $2040:

    — Explain this pair of results to me: on eBay, a CBCS 9.2 Signature Series CPV copy of Amazing Spider-Man #238 (with tattooz included) auctioned for $400:

    — Versus last night a raw ASM #238 CPV in “high grade” (but missing the tattooz insert and the back cover had a small stain), auctioned for $550:

Kind of amazing to me that the above raw “no tattooz” CPV in “high grade” got a 38% higher sale price at auction versus the signed professionally-graded CBCS 9.2… I’m not sure how to explain it — they were a couple of months apart so timing may have been a factor, and I have to wonder how much more a comparabe CGC SS copy would have gone for (i.e. did the CBCS slab attract fewer bidders?).

    — Moving on, here was a noteworthy sale of a Blip #1 CPV, ungraded with a large stain on the back cover:

    — An ungraded GI Joe 21 CPV found a bidder:

    — Jayden Mitchell brought this one to my attention, it was a “mis-listed” CPV copy of Last Days of the Justice Society (super-high cover price on the CPV at $3.50 for that one — ties with Action #600 for highest cover price DC CPV), and it was bid to $76.79 which is well above our guide value for the issue:

    — A raw 8.5 Star Wars #68 CPV auctioned for $274:

    — A raw “high grade” Thor #337 CPV auctioned for $162.50:

And turning next to recent CGC CPV auctions on eBay, some noteworthy examples I spotted include:

    — A Thor #337 CPV in CGC Signature Series 9.6 auctioned for $455

    — A TMNT Adventures #1 (1989) DIRECT EDITION CPV in CGC 9.8 found a bidder at $300

    • Nicely done!! I think you made out like a bandit on that one, such a tough book to find in the highest grades… I notice that the current CPV census counts for #3 and #4 have similar grand-totals at 51 and 55. Yet, in 9.6+ issue #3 with its black cover has just 15 CPVs on record whereas #4 has 29 CPVs. This argues for #3 being essentially twice as hard to find in the highest grades as #4. A CGC 9.6 regular newsstand copy of #3 on eBay is currently asking $225; a CGC 9.6 #4 CPV went for $227 earlier in the year. Based on comparative rarity versus those comps I’d have expected way more than a 27% price difference on the CPV you won. Bravo! 🙂
